Pretty Advertising

Pretty advertising is an ad style that many businesses get caught up in when they aren?t in the habit of consistently tracking responses from their advertisements. The result is an ad that looks pretty, but isn?t memorable and just won?t move many people to action. The chief goal of most business advertising is to deliver a message in such a way that the audience is motivated to take action on the message. Look at an ad for just 1 second and then answer the question ? Do I want to read the whole ad? In reality, the decision on whether or not to read an ad is made in about 1/20th of a second. Grabby headlines and catchy copy will win against pretty any day.

Affected Copy

Affected advertising copy is a style of ad writing that sounds like it was written by a college sophomore majoring in English literature. It?s as if this college student was writing the ad with the goal of producing a very big impact on the reader. To achieve this goal, extravagant phrases are used to make an impact by force, rather than words designed to stimulate real thought or feeling. Here is an example of affected copy taken from an actual jeweler?s advertisement for star sapphires:

Unbelievable Copy

Advertising copy that strains the credulity of intelligent readers is simply not effective today. This kind of advertising is reminiscent of the ?cure-all? patent medicine advertisements of yesteryear. Most of the advertisers who rely on exaggerated and/or unbelievable claims are relegated to selling their wares via late night infomercials or spam emails. A good rule of thumb is to abide by the Better Business Bureau code of advertising. Make sure that the claims that you use in your advertising are substantiated in the ad. Doing this will build your trust and credibility with your audience.

Lessons Learned

Michael?s old ad was a pretty ad. It had been produced by a professional graphics artist and it looked nice, but it wasn?t getting results. When Michael?s new ad ran, it was very different than anything he had run before. The new ad was built around a grabby headline and ad copy that made the reader want to read the whole ad and then go to his store to buy his new product. The results were incredible ? there were a lot more sales than before and Michael swore he would never again go back to pretty advertising.

Avoid these three types of bad advertising and you?ll be way ahead of the competition.

I like to keep things simple so let?s put it into perspective. Here goes?

Yeah, the economy does suck and we all wish we could go back to the 1990?s ?dart board pick em decade?. But we can?t, so we have to make due with what we have. Along the way we cut back on many an item to save up for what?s MOST IMPORTANT!?

Here are just a few cutbacks?

• We don?t need three thousand channels on our cable or satellite TV?s: so we pull a Bruce Springsteen and suffer through only ?57 CHANNELS WITH NOTHIN ON? for the time being.
• The Three-year old clunker may have to make it another twelve thousand miles: so we change the oil and do without?the voice activated navigation system with laser guided?parking control?for now!

• The new cell phone that knows all, tells all and may soon be able to baby-sit your two-year old son or daughter still has a few tweaks: so, we can put that on hold till we have the funds after we refinance our present mortgage.
• The new addition on your home to include the High Tech Man Cave with I Max compatible entertainment system and earth quake sound re-enactment, will take extra sound proofing to keep the neighbors happy: so we?ll ultimately have to wait on the?
• 1000 thousand inch flat screen TV with holographic interaction and teleportation capabilities.

  WHAT?S THE COST OF OBESITY AND BEING OVERWEIGHT?

  

  IT AIN?T PRETTY

  Obesity is becoming the norm in our beloved country?an expensive and dangerous norm. As the prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased in the United States, so have related health care costs. The statistics presented below represent the economic cost of obesity in the United States as of 2010. Supersized isn?t an exaggeration on our bellies and in our wallets!!!

• As of 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that health-care costs in this country were around $147 billion to cover health complications from obesity ? more than 9 percent of the nation?s annual health-care budget.
• Obese Americans pay $1,429 a year more in medical costs than someone who has a body mass index (BMI) below 25; that?s 42 percent higher health-care costs for an individual.
• Employees, who are overweight, on average, make $1.25 an hour less than a low-BMI colleague, adding up to a six-figure loss over a career.
• Women get hit the hardest when it comes to paying a high price at work for being overweight ? obese women can make up to 24 percent less than an average-size women while even slightly overweight women make around 6 percent less.
  

  THE OBESITY PRICE TAG: $6,454?

  BUT WHAT?S THE REAL COST???

  ADD TOGETHER:

• The higher annual costs of health care and medication ($1,429)
• Wage discrimination ($2,500),
• Travel costs (a conservative $25),
• Other lifestyle costs such as mobility and clothing ($2,500),
• The cost of being overweight is around $6,454 a year, or$538 a month.
• Over a lifetime (40 adult years), that comes to $258,000. If?you put that $538 a month in your retirement account, earning a moderate average of 6 percent interest, you?d have $1,082,675. But that?s without diabetes or complications.
• With these add-ons you?re looking at $19,454 a year in total costs.

That?s $778,160 over a lifetime and over $3 million if that money had been invested

And I?m sorry to say, but technology isn?t gonna get us out of this one. It may be a catalyst in the opposite direction. What do I mean?

A new study finds:

• 65 percent of Americans spend more time with their computer than their spouse; Ralph Cramden did better with Alice after their honeymoon!!
• On average, we waste 12 hours a month fixing computer problems. Wow, that?s stress free time!
• And overall, most people spend 1 hour per day on the computer, 2 ? 3 hours watching TV and 2 hours listening to the radio. This translates into one third of our waking hours.

  AND WE COMPLAIN THAT WE DON?T HAVE ENOUGH TIME FOR OURSELVES!

  Who takes responsibility? It ultimately ends up with us. But I wonder what our response would be to the person in the bread line?during the ?Great Depression? if asked the question of whether they?d rather eat or watch TV? Given out track record it may sound something like this:

  What?s the difference? I can do both at the same time!

Hudson Clean Energy Partners has acquired a minority stake in China-based GSE Investment Corp., an operator of solid waste-to-energy and tap water/wastewater treatment projects. New statue depicts late NKorea leader on horseback (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Coat flying open, reins in hand, Kim Jong Il is depicted astride a galloping horse in a larger-than-life statue unveiled Tuesday as part of birthday celebrations for the late North Korean leader.

The statue is the first bronze casting of Kim, who during his lifetime shunned proposals to erect a bronze like the massive statue of his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, that towers over downtown Pyongyang. Kim Jong Il, who would have turned 70 on Thursday, died of a heart attack in December.

Kim Jong Il told officials in 1999 that he wasn't ready to accept such adulation while his promise of building an affluent society in the nation of 24 million remained unfulfilled, according to excerpts from a speech published last month. During Kim's reign, the country suffered from a famine that killed hundreds of thousands of North Koreans.

In a posthumous compromise, artisans from the Mansudae Art Studio depicted the Kims riding side by side on horseback for Pyongyang's first public sculpture of the late leader. But artisans told The Associated Press that a towering bronze of Kim Jong Il is in the works and will take its place on Mansu Hill.

Tuesday's widely anticipated unveiling of the 18-foot-tall (5.7 meters) statue took place amid a fervent propaganda campaign to build up the man who led the nation for 17 years as his son and successor, Kim Jong Un, takes over the country's helm.

"Legitimacy comes from his forefathers. Kim Jong Un's father and grandfather may be dead, but he embodies their essence."

Calling himself the "inheritor" of his father's cause, Kim Jong Il was said to have avoided the kind of veneration he ordered for Kim Il Sung, even as he ruled North Korea with an iron fist.

"Some time ago the Party History Institute submitted to me a suggestion that my statue be built marking my 60th birthday," he reportedly told top Workers' Party officials in 1999. "After going over the document, I wrote on it 'Permission Not Granted,' and sent it down."

Kim's era included some of the country's toughest periods, including a famine in the 1990s that killed hundreds of thousands of people and protracted tensions over the nation's drive to build nuclear weapons. Despite a decade of warming ties with South Korea during his rule, relations with Seoul are now at their lowest point in years and the peninsula remains in a technical state of war.

"I cannot have my statue set up on the excuse of my 60th birthday when I have still many important tasks to do, like those of economic construction, improving people's standard of living and reunifying our country," he said, according to excerpts published in the Pyongyang Times last month.

However, he left the matter of a statue to party officials, ordering them to "correctly understand" his desires and dilemma.

Son Kim Jong Un initiated the project two months ago to build the statue of the late leader, said Ro Ik Hwa, a sculptor from the Mansudae Art Studio.

"So far, there has not been any example of making a giant horse-riding statue like this within two months," he told AP. "We sculptors worked day and night to complete it, showing the loyalty of our people."

Kim Jong Un was not at the ceremony attended by the rest of North Korea's core military and political leadership.

The ceremonial head of state, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly Kim Yong Nam, praised Kim Jong Il for "applying his unique 'military first' policy to turn our country into an invincible one that can never be defeated and has a nuclear deterrent in the face of the deadly pressing offensive of imperialists."

The unveiling of the statue is the marquee event of birthday commemorations in a nation that remains in a semiofficial state of mourning for the man often referred to as "our fatherly general."

Workers fanned out across the capital city to decorate streets with flowers and North Korean flags. They pounded at frozen flower beds with picks, making space to plant row after row of bouquets made of fabric.

Young adults allowed to stay on parents' health insurance have improved access to care

Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that laws permitting children to stay on their parents' health insurance through age 26 result in improved access to health care compared to states without those laws. This analysis indicates the potential positive impact of a key provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA). The study appears in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The ACA requires private insurance companies to support children on their parents' policies through age 26. The Mount Sinai research team analyzed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and compared the period before the state laws were enacted (2002 to 2004) to the period after the state laws went into effect (2008 to 2009). They found that in the 34 states that had such laws, the affected patients had greater rates of health insurance, were more likely to identify a personal physician and receive a physical exam, and were less likely to forgo care due to cost.

"These research findings will inform our understanding of what to expect from the federal health reform provision that allows those up to age 26 to join their parents' policy," said Alex Blum, MD, MPH, lead author of the study and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Health Evidence and Policy at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "Our results predict that many more young people will have a personal doctor and regular checkups, and no longer have to go without care due to cost. These are critical components to provide health security to young people just when they are starting out on their own."

The authors conclude that their findings may underestimate the impact of the ACA. Unlike state laws, the ACA applies to all individuals up to age 26 and is not subject to limitations on self-insured health insurance plans.

"The Employee Retirement Income Security Act exempts all self-insured health insurance plans from the state laws we studied," said Dr. Blum. "Nearly half of all Americans have self- insured policies. It is possible that we only identified half of the likely impact of the ACA provision."

Additionally, six state laws were more generous than the ACA's provision and extended eligibility beyond 26 years. "Four states that enacted laws prior to the ACA imposed premium caps to limit parental costs," Dr. Blum explained. "The ACA could be amended to reach even more young adults by raising the limits to age 29 and by limiting the premiums, as some states have done."

The company that runs the Depression-era skyscraper, the tallest?buildingin New York, is planning to go public in a stock offering that could raise $1 billion, according to documents filed with regulators Monday.

That means that even if you can't afford to buy a home, you can buy a stake in perhaps the nation's most iconic office?building. At least until the government sells shares in the Pentagon.

The planned IPO comes about 10 years after real estate investor Peter Malkin bought the 102-story Art Deco landmark from Donald Trump and a business partner for $57.5 million.

It's the latest chapter in a saga that dates to 1931, when the?building?was completed, establishing it as the city's tallest skyscraper. It regained that standing after the collapse of the World Trade Center twin towers in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Millions of tourists visiting New York ascend its heights to gape over the city from its observation deck, made famous in films such as "Sleepless in Seattle." It was 1933's "King Kong" that showed a giant ape clutching Fay Wray and fending off airplanes atop the tower.

The?building's?star turns in Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows and its dominant presence in the New York landscape have made it among the most beloved structures in the nation. And the opportunity to buy stock in a company that owns such a landmark doesn't come up often.

Some of the nation's marquee?buildings?are owned by publicly traded companies. Boston Properties owns the General Motors?building?in New York and the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco's financial district. But neither has the history that the?Empire?State?Building?has.

"You have a trophy property that is irreplaceable," says Hessam Nadji, managing director for research and advisory services at Marcus & Millichap, a commercial real estate services firm.

In its regulatory filing Monday,?Empire?State?Realty Trust Inc. didn't say how many shares might be involved in the IPO or what price they might fetch. The $1 billion figure isn't final, either. It's subject to investor demand.

The company, the predecessor of which is Malkin Holdings LLC, plans to use proceeds to pay investors, repay loans and cover the expenses of the IPO and the company's formation last summer, as well as for possible future acquisitions.

"We've extracted two bodies from the plane, that of the honorable Augustin Katumba Mwanke who has just been moved to the morgue, and that of a co-pilot," said Provincial Transport Minister Laban Kyalangalilwa. He said there were 2 pilots and 10 passengers on the private jet.

South Kivu Governor Marcellin Cishambo has been admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment, and most of the other passengers were taken from the plane alive, Kyalangalilwa said.

"We do not know the cause of the crash and we await the investigations, but apparently there was not bad weather here in Bukavu," he said.

Congo has one of the worst air safety records in the world. The Central African country's safety regulations are notoriously lax. Few passable roads traverse the country after decades of war, forcing the population to rely on ill-maintained planes and boats.

LinkedIn surges, setting the tone for social media

Shares of professional-networking website LinkedIn surged Friday, jumping 18 percent, after the company reported quarterly sales that more than doubled and passed a major milestone, chalking up 150 million registered users worldwide.

Michael Graham, an Internet analyst at Canaccord Genuity, raised his earnings estimate for the company, writing in a research note that LinkedIn has taken ?another step on the path toward becoming the default global hiring solution.?

The growth in users cements LinkedIn?s position as the largest professional network on the Internet. The company?s performance and outlook is keenly watched by investors as an indication of whether the business model of Internet companies is solid -- especially in light of Facebook?s filing for an IPO last week.

Facebook?s public offering looks set to be one of the largest and most talked about in recent memory and follows public offerings from other companies in the social media space, including Groupon, Pandora, Zynga and LinkedIn.

Started in the living room of ex-PayPal executive Reid Hoffman in 2002 and officially launched in May 2003, LinkedIn is similar to Facebook in that it connects people but it is much smaller and is geared towards professionals.

It makes money by selling premium subscriptions to its members and by helping companies with hiring and marketing. Its services are also used by professionals seeking jobs or contacts.

Speaking on CNBC Friday about his company?s strong quarter, LinkedIn?s CEO Jeff Weiner said the company is able to grow in any economic environment.

?When times get tough, when there?s macroeconomic uncertainty, we see a number of people turning to LinkedIn, specifically turning to their networks, specifically for job security,? he said. ?But by the same token when the economy starts to improve and recruiting starts to pick up that benefits the hiring solutions business.?

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company said it saw double-digit revenue growth in its subscription base in the fourth quarter and its marketing solutions, while revenue from its hiring solutions product showed triple-digit revenue growth.

Shares of LinkedIn are up 41 percent so far this year, outperforming the?Standard & Poor's 500, which has grown 7 percent. But not every new tech company in the recent rash of social media IPOs has performed as well.

Earlier this week, daily deals website Groupon surprised Wall Street by failing to make a profit since becoming a publicly-traded company in late 2011. It saw a fourth-quarter net loss of $42.7 million. That?s better than one year ago, when it saw a loss of $378.6 million, but still disappointing to analysts who had expected a small profit.

Shares of Groupon are essentially flat for the year.

Canaccord Genuity?s Graham cautions that LinkedIn could face threats in the future. Facebook and Google+ have not made significant moves into LinkedIn?s business, but were they to do so it could hurt LinkedIn?s growth and profitability, he said.

Also, given that LinkedIn has penetrated a majority of the U.S. market for knowledge workers, the company is dependent upon international markets for the majority of its member growth. If LinkedIn is unable to roll out strong local-language sites at a rapid enough pace, or if potential international members don't find the service compelling, member growth could stall, Graham said.

4 New Genes Linked to Type 2 Diabetes (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Feb. 9 (HealthDay News) -- Four new genes associated with type 2 diabetes have been identified by researchers, who also pinpointed six independent diabetes-associated gene variants at previously known locations on chromosomes.

These findings, from an analysis of 50,000 genetic variants across 2,000 genes linked to heart and metabolic function, appear in the Feb. 9 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.

The results offer valuable insight into the genetic risk for type 2 diabetes in multiple ethnic groups and could help lead to new treatments, according to a journal news release.

A number of environmental and genetic factors are associated with type 2 diabetes.

"Together, known [type 2 diabetes] genetic variants explain only about 10 percent of the genetic variance, indicating that additional genetic factors are likely to contribute to disease risk," senior study co-author Dr. Brendan Keating, of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said in the news release.

"Further, previous studies have been based almost exclusively on individuals of European ancestry, and genetic contributors to [type 2 diabetes] are less well understood in non-European populations," he added. "An important first step towards understanding genetic risk across populations is to establish whether known [diabetes-associated] genes span ethnicities or are population-specific."

Keating and an international team of colleagues analyzed 39 multiethnic studies on type 2 diabetes that included more than 17,000 people with diabetes and 70,000 people without the disease.

"As a result of our large-scale genetic analysis, we uncovered previously unknown European and multiethnic genetic variants and confirmed that, together, known genetic risk factors influence [type 2 diabetes] risk in multiethnic populations, including African-Americans, Hispanics and Asians," senior co-author Richa Saxena, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said in the release.

Saxena said that identifying new genes associated with type 2 diabetes in diverse ethnic groups could eventually guide strategies for developing treatments.

Romanian accused of hacking NASA-JPL computers (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A federal grand jury has indicted a Romanian citizen on charges he hacked into 25 climate-research computers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

Tuesday's indictment charges Robert Butyka, 25, with one count of unauthorized impairment of a protected computer, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.

Officials said the 2010 attack made computers in the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder Program unusable for two months while malicious code was removed and data restored. The program is used in climate research and weather forecasting.

The U.S. attorney's office said NASA worked with Romanian authorities, resulting in Butyka's conviction in Romania last month. He has been sentenced to three years in prison there and would face a sentence of up to 10 years if convicted in the U.S.

JPL spokeswoman Veronica McGregor said it won't disclose how far the hacker got into the system, but he wasn't able to access the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder instrument in space that transmits weather measurements back to Earth.

Damage from the hacking was estimated at $500,000, including costs of work on the computers and lost research time.

Tibetan sets himself on fire in China (AP)

BEIJING ? Another Tibetan has set himself on fire in western China to protest government policies while thousands marched in another part of China to show support for their exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, a report said.

U.S.-funded Radio Free Asia said a man, apparently a monk, set himself on fire in Sichuan province's Aba prefecture on Wednesday and was taken away by soldiers and police. His condition was not immediately clear. It said the man shouted slogans before setting himself ablaze, citing a statement from Losang Yeshe and Kanyag Tsering, exiled Tibetan monks in India.

If confirmed, the incident would bring to at least 20 the number of monks, nuns and lay Tibetans who have set themselves on fire over the last year, mostly in traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama and his supporters of encouraging the immolations.

Radio Free Asia also said Tibetan protests erupted Wednesday in two counties in Qinghai province in northwest China, with about 1,000 people marching in each. Citing local sources and exiles with contacts in the region, it said security surrounded protesters but no violence occurred.

The broadcaster said protesters shouted slogans and carried banners calling for a "free Tibet," the release of all Tibetan political prisoners, and the return of the Dalai Lama.

A police officer reached Thursday by telephone in Nangqian, where one of the protests allegedly occurred, said he had no reports of any protests. Like many Chinese officials, he refused to give his name.

In recent protests in Sichuan, Tibetan activist groups said at least six Tibetans were killed when police fired on protesters. The Chinese government says two rioters died and 24 police and firefighters were injured when rock-wielding Tibetan separatists attacked police stations.

This has been the region's most violent period since 2008, when deadly rioting in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, spread to Tibetan areas in adjoining provinces. China responded then by flooding the area with troops and closing Tibetan regions entirely to foreigners for about a year.

Western media trying to visit areas where unrest has been reported in the last several weeks have been turned away by security forces.

Lobsang Sangay, the leader of Tibetans' self-declared exile government, said Wednesday that convoys of Chinese security forces have been seen moving toward Tibet in recent days, ahead of the Tibetan New Year on Feb. 22 and the March anniversary of the failed 1959 uprising.

"If the Chinese government think that the Tibet issue can be solved through violence, intimidation, then it's not going to happen, because the Tibetan spirit is strong," he said in Dharmsala, India.

China on Tuesday vowed to crack down on the unrest and accused overseas activist groups and the Dalai Lama of fomenting the violence.

"We believe that this is a case of a handful of criminals illegally gathering and smashing and looting," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a routine briefing.

China says Tibet has been under its rule for centuries, but many Tibetans say the region was functionally independent for most of that time. The Dalai Lama has called greater autonomy for Tibet and denies Beijing's claims that he is a separatist.
