I Like Soup ? Drink What YOU Like

I Like Soup? and Cru Beaujolais ? A Perfect Chilly Weather Pairing

For a summer that included weather conditions that would be considered extreme in most areas ? consecutive days of triple digit temperatures (ask anyone who attended WBC11) coupled with oppressive humidity, an earthquake, yes, an earthquake, followed by Hurricane Irene that dumped 10? to 16? of rain in many parts of the state ? fall weather has set in quickly.?? Our corner of Virginia saw a 30 degree temperature drop from one day to the next ? 87 degrees and sunny one day, then 57 degrees and rainy the next.

Though I appreciate the beauty that fall brings to Virginia with red, orange, and yellow foliage against a backdrop of green rolling hills, I?d much prefer to ease in to fall with progressively cooler temperatures.? For some reason, I seem to get rancid colds when the temperatures drop so significantly.

I?m hesitant to complain too much since weather is a simple inconvenience for me, but my winemaking friends have been dealt the weather equivalent of a 2 ? 6 offsuit hand this year.? (Ed. Note ? Of the roughly 170 different possible starting hands in Texas Hold ?em, this is one of the worse, requiring creativity and large dose of luck to turn in to a winning hand.)

In terms of the weather in Southeastern, VA, the only constant is change, and much warmer temps will no doubt return soon.? Until then, the cooler weather provides a reason to try a new soup recipe ? Jacque P?pin?s take on bean and ham soup ? and open one of my favorite summer-to-fall transition wines, cru Beaujolais.

I?ve long been a fan of bean and ham soup, and the many variations available in nearly every cookbook that contains a soup section, but Jacques P?pin?s version is one of my favorites (I believe there is another version of this soup in P?pin?s Fast Food My Way):

Ingredients:

• Most importantly, 1 bottle of Cru Beaujolais.? I went with one from Juli?nas.
• 4 smoked ham hocks (get the meaty ones)
• 1/2 pound dried cannellini beans (1 1/4 cups)
• 3 quarts water
• 2 medium red-skinned potatoes, peeled, cut in to 1-inch pieces
• 1 large leek, white and pale green parts only, cut into 1-inch pieces
• 1 large carrot, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
• 1 large parsnip, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (can do without parsnip)
• 1 large celery rib, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
• 1/2 pound cabbage, cut into 2-inch pieces (we used kale as a substitute)
• Salt and pepper, obviously
• Loaf of fresh French bread, sliced, lightly toasted
• 2 cups shredded Gruy?re cheese (to top the soup and toasted bread slices). I hold the opinion (very strongly) that Gruyere makes everything taste better, and the Gruyere atop toasted bread added a nice crunchy compliment to the soup.

Juli?nas ? A great pairing:? As I?ve noted here a number of times, I totally dig Beaujolais (with the exception of Nouveau), and can?t figure out why more of my wine savvy friends don?t appreciate wines from the Crus.? Perhaps the simple virtue of Cru Beaujolais ? bright, juicy, low tannin, high acidity, and practical price points ? is lost on some (or maybe I?m too simple to know any better ).

I attended a Beaujolais tasting in the spring and had the chance to taste the George Duboeuf 2009 offerings from each of the ten Crus.? The Morgon and this Juli?nas were by far my favorites.? The Duboeuf 2009 Juli?nas is full of blueberry, violets, mineral and black tea components.? True to form, nice acidity that worked well with this soup.

Both the bean and ham soup and the Duboeuf Juli?nas were a perfect accompaniment to the chilly temps.

Military Officially Ends Ban on Openly Gay Soldiers

For the past 18 years the U.S. military has followed a policy which essentially banned openly gay soldiers from serving; for quite some time gay rights activists have worked to reverse this ban and today the ban was finally lifted officially. The bill was originally passed a few months ago and today was the selected day for the ban to be lifted and just as expected the ban has now been officially lifted.

To commemorate lifting the ban on openly gay soldiers President Obama officially spoke about the situation. He was very quick to welcome the new policy which will finally allow soldiers and members of the military to be themselves without the fear of being removed. There are currently an estimated 65,000 gay members of the U.S. military and they and the entire gay community have expressed their gratitude for the lift of the ?don?t ask don?t tell? policy as well.

This is once again a step in the right direction for equality and openness according to many analysts. The end of the ban on openly gay members of the military marks an end of the 18 year discrimination which and will hopefully lead to more acceptance by everyone. All around the country gay support groups celebrated this outstanding victory as it is truly one of the greatest successes for the entire community and it will surely give the gay community more momentum for future endeavors towards equality and acceptance.

Denver on list of possible satellite patent office locations / Denver ...

The patent-reform law signed by President Barack Obama on Friday authorizes the government to open at least three patent offices throughout the country ? and Denver is considered a finalist for one of them.

As part of a broader effort to speed up a bogged-down patent-approval process, the America Invents Act opens the door for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to broaden its geographic reach to innovators and tap a bigger pool of employment talent.

Denver has long been among a handful of cities vying for a patent office. Last year Detroit was selected for the first such outpost. Colorado appears to be competing primarily with California, Texas, Washington and Utah for one in the next round.

The stakes are high in this struggling economy: a patent office could employ 100 well-paid patent examiners, give a boost to local law firms and attract technology companies to the area.

Supporters of a Denver office point to the metro area?s highly trained technology and scientific workforce, its desirability as a place to live, its reasonable cost of living and its central location.

?Denver, from many different perspectives, is the right location,? said Tom Franklin, a Denver patent attorney who has worked for years to bring a satellite office to Colorado. ?My hope is this law becomes a self- fulfilling prophecy in terms of bringing an office to Denver. The language in the law describes Denver perfectly.?

The law states that, in choosing satellite locations where it can best recruit and retain examiners, the patent office ?shall consider the availability of scientific and technically knowledgeable personnel in the region from which to draw new patent examiners at minimal recruitment cost.?

If that sounds like it was written by someone promoting a city like Denver ? which has plenty of technical talent, a relatively low cost of living and highly regarded quality of life ? well, it was. Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet had the amendment authorizing satellite offices inserted into the Senate version of the bill, Franklin said.

Franklin, of Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton, and two other Colorado patent attorneys ? Michael Drapkin of Holland Hart and John Posthumus of Sheridan Ross ? helped draft the amendment with others in the business and legal community. The legal trio collectively spent thousands of pro-bono hours and made dozens of trips to Washington to promote the idea of a Denver satellite office.

Those efforts and the involvement of Bennet and Colorado Sen. Mark Udall have placed Denver on the shortlist of cities most often mentioned in the running for the office. Colorado?s entire congressional delegation has gotten involved in the push, as have other political leaders including Gov. John Hickenlooper and former Gov. Bill Ritter.

?As a gateway to the West, Colorado is an ideal location for a new office,? Bennet said in a statement Friday. ?It is perfectly situated to connect innovators and businesses across the country.?

In addition to creating jobs, Udall said in a statement last week that an office here ?would also put our state on the map as a hub for entrepreneurship and attract the startup companies and quality researchers who further spur job growth in our state.?

The Colorado effort suffered a setback in December when the patent agency picked Detroit for the first satellite office.

But the Obama administration was persuaded that additional satellite offices are necessary and agreed to potentially open more.

?Our hope is that if they try Detroit for a while and get traction there, they?ll see the benefits of opening more,? Drapkin said.

Other countries have decentralized patent offices, which gives them an advantage in innovation, Drapkin said. Inventors shouldn?t have to travel to Washington to meet with an examiner and discuss their patent filings, he said. Reduced turnover and better access should make the office more efficient and able to handle greater volume, he said.

?First to file?

The patent agency employs 9,500 people, including more than 6,000 examiners in its Alexandria, Va., offices. As many as 2,000 new examiners could be hired during the next year. Additional funding is also expected for technology investments that would enable satellite offices.

The law is the first significant change in patent law since 1952. It is meant to help the office reduce its backlog of 1.2 million patents. Each patent approval takes an average of three years.

A key shift in the law is changing the United States from a ?first to invent? to a ?first to file? system. The move aims to reduce disputes and litigation, but groups representing entrepreneurs and small businesses complained it will favor corporations with big legal budgets. Inventors also have criticized the act for failing to rein in patent litigation abuses.

The law was backed by companies including Google and Apple as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Another important facet of the law is to give the office more control over its budget. Currently Congress receives patent-filing fees, but it doesn?t always budget the full amount to the office. The new law will establish an escrow fund for the office?s revenues and give the office more predictability in budgeting.

The law also sets up a new process for reviewing patents, intended to reduce litigation.

Mammograms on the rise for foreign-born women living in U.S.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2011) ? Fewer immigrant women receive mammograms than native-born American women, according to Penn State researchers, who note that more immigrant women are getting mammograms now than a decade ago.

"Lack of access to health care persistently contributes to mammography screening disparities among immigrants," said Nengliang Aaron Yao, graduate student in health policy and administration.

Yao, working with Marianne Hillemeier, associate professor of health policy and administration, reviewed data on women over 40 who received mammograms in the United States from the years 2000 and 2008. He reported these statistics to attendees at the American Association for Cancer Research conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Racial/Ethnic Minorities and the Medically Underserved Sept. 19 in Washington, D.C. The data came from the National Health Interview Survey.

"More recent immigrants, those with poor access to health care, and those who were younger and less educated had lower mammography rates at both time points," said Yao.

Yao found the number of immigrant women who received mammograms rose by almost 10 percent from 2000 to 2008. While the percentage of immigrant women receiving mammograms is less than U.S.-born women, the gap has shrunk. In 2000, the gap between immigrants and U.S.-born women was 11.2 percent, while in 2008 the gap was only 3.4 percent. In 2000 60.2 percent of immigrant women over 40 received mammograms while in 2008, 65.5 percent received them.

"Mammography rates among immigrant women remain lower than the native-born," Yao said. "Increasing access to health insurance and a usual source of care will further diminish disparities in mammography receipt."

Netflix's DVD business: Does Qwikster have a future? ? Online ...

Netflix announced in a blog post Sunday evening that its DVD-by-mail operations would soon be rebranded ?Qwikster,? and that the service would be separated from the streaming service that the company has been pushing for the last several years. Doing so clearly grants some independence to the unit, and will help it to operate without dealing with fast-growing streaming business. But it also raises questions about the future viability of a standalone DVD-by-mail operation.

Netflix isn?t completely abandoning the new DVD business ? at least, not yet. After all, Qwikster will have the same characteristic red envelope and the same legacy infrastructure and library supporting it. However, it seems clear that Netflix is creating a wall between the two businesses as a way to smartly manage its profits and losses, and to help Wall Street better value the separate operations.

All that said, separating the two could also hasten the demise of the DVD-by-mail business, if the company?s recent subscriber guidance is any indication of user?s interest in a standalone DVD-by-mail service. After all, it was that part of the forecast that Netflix most badly misjudged. The company expected 3 million standalone DVD subscribers when it first gave guidance on its second-quarter earnings call, and revised that downward by 800,000 in its updated forecast.

More importantly, creating a separate website and a separate billing relationship could cause even more DVD members to leave the service. As I wrote last week, there?s power in the bundle:

?By the end of the quarter, half of all Netflix subscribers in the U.S. will continue to subscribe to both streaming and DVD-by-mail services. That gives them the best of both worlds: Instant access to streaming content, with a much wider library of DVDs available if they?re willing to wait.?

But what happens when you create a separate website, with separate queue management and a separate billing mechanism? If you?re Netflix, you lose the power of the existing customer relationship and much of the goodwill that you?ve built up over the last several years. Regardless of the miscues in handling the price change and the separation of the DVD business, the Netflix brand still carries tremendous value to a number of existing and potential new subscribers.

You also lose the power of the bundle. One reason cable companies have been aggressively pushing triple-play packages over the last several years is that users who subscribe to two or more services are much less likely to quit. By separating DVD-by-mail and streaming businesses into separate billing relationships with subscribers, Netflix is exposing both to potentially higher churn.

Finally, while Netflix maintains that the change will allow the new DVD-by-mail brand to better manage a slowdown in its business, this is also a good way for the parent company to begin evaluating so-called ?strategic alternatives? for the business. With a huge amount of shipping and order management infrastructure already built out, as well as a separate billing system, it would be easy enough for Netflix to eventually spin the unit out, or to sell it to a third-party with more patience for a dying business model.

UNITED NATIONS ? Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he's sympathetic to the frustrations of the Palestinian people who have failed to achieve an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

China calls on governments to tackle debt (AP)

BEIJING ? China is ready to help Europe confront its debt crisis but the United States and other developed countries must "put their own house in order" and tackle their economic problems, Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday.

Speaking at a meeting of the Swiss-based World Economic Forum, Wen said China is ready to invest more in Europe, which he called an important economic and strategic partner. He called for closer coordination on managing the global economy.

"We have on many occasions expressed our readiness to extend a helping hand and a readiness to increase our investment in Europe," Wen said after a speech to the forum in the eastern city of Dalian. He said he repeated that pledge in a recent phone conservation with European Commission President Jose Barroso.

But Wen also struck a stern note with Europe and the United States, telling them to tackle their debt problems and make changes to restore global financial stability and steady economic growth.

"Countries must first put their own house in order," Wen said.

He called on Washington to protect global investors ? a reference to Beijing's huge stockpile of Treasury and other government debt. Chinese leaders worry U.S. leaders might resort to moves in response to the crisis that might erode the value of the dollar and China's American assets.

Wen also hinted at possible conditions on Beijing's help, saying it wants Europe to take "bold steps" including officially declaring China to be a free-market economy.

Western governments are looking to China, which rebounded quickly from the 2008 global crisis and has $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves, for investment as Europe struggles with a debt crisis and Washington tries to revive sluggish growth.

This week, Italy's government said its finance minister met with officials of China's sovereign wealth fund amid speculation Rome is hoping Beijing will buy its bonds or invest in its companies. The Italian government declined to give any details of the talks.

Wen promised China will help drive global growth by controlling surging inflation and pushing ahead reforms aimed at boosting domestic consumption and reducing its reliance on exports and investment.

"I am confident that China's economy will make new contribution to robust, sustainable and balanced growth of the global economy," Wen said.

?It didn?t take too long to get back to business as usual on energy policy,? said Adam Sieminski, the chief energy economist for Deutsche Bank ? who, like many experts, had expected the attacks to aid the push for energy independence, on both the supply and demand sides.

It brought the American public together. People said, ?We?re going to build a stronger nation.? ? Otherwise, ?it seemed like the impetus from the terrorist attacks really carried over into creating the Department of Homeland Security and attacking Afghanistan and Iraq,? Ebell added. ?And there was unity on those things, but it didn?t go very far beyond that into domestic policy.?

But 10 years ago, it seemed reasonable to expect that the nation?s energy ways would have to change.

AT&T could lower T-Mobile bid price if remedies grow: report

Bangalore (Reuters) - AT&T Inc can lower the price it pays for T-Mobile USA Inc if the remedies requested by regulators become too expensive, a Bloomberg report said, citing three people with direct knowledge of the merger contract.

AT&T would be able to pay less than the deal's original $39 billion value if regulators demand asset sales that surpass 20 percent of that figure, or about $7.8 billion, the report cited unnamed people as saying.

AT&T could walk away from the deal and pay the breakup fee if the concessions requested top 40 percent of that value, the report said.

On August 31, the U.S. government sued to block AT&T's purchase of T-mobile citing concerns it would harm competition in the wireless prices and lead to higher prices.

Dallas-based AT&T agreed to compensate T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) with $3 billion in cash, wireless spectrum and roaming agreements if the deal isn't completed.

AT&T and Deutsche Telekom could not be immediately reached for a comment on the Bloomberg report.
